OUR TEAM HISTORY . . .
Team Type 1 is a not for profit professional cycling team and triathlete team and persons with Type 2 diabetes. Teams are composed of female and male athletes. The team was founded by Phil Southerland (video), a 2000 graduate of Leon High School, Tallahassee, Florida. Phil was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 7 months of age at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. As he grew up, Phil became determined not to let diabetes hinder his athletic activities. His mission evolved to prove that persons with diabetes can compete at the same level as anyone else as long as they learn to "take care" of their diabetes
Team Type 1 has "teamed up" with some great groups and great individuals to raise funds for diabetic supplies, insulin to live, and scholarships for children to attend diabetes camp in Tallahassee area and Rwanda: Dr. Larry Deeb and the Rotarian Action Group for Diabetes support of the International Diabetes Federation Life for A Child Program in Rwanda, The Cake Shop, Sweat Therapy Fitness, Just Get Fit Health and Fitness, The Honeytree Natural Foods, Dr. Nancy Wright, Whole Child Leon, Florida State University (FSU) Student Government, including the FSU Cycling Team and FSU Campus Recreation, and The Tallahassee Memorial Diabetes Center and Whole Child Leon.
This mission of this FIRST Team Type 1 "indoor cycling marathon" fundraiser is to promote diabetes awareness and exercise as one particular way of taking control of diabetes and obesity (which can lead to Type 2 diabetes). The funds you donate or raise will provide diabetes camp scholarships for children to be educated about living with diabetes. The money you raise or donate is also for insulin and diabetic supplies to be delivered by the team as well as sent to Rwanda on behalf of Team Type 1 in concert with Rotarian Action Group for Diabetes support of the International Diabetes Federation's Life for A Child Program in Rwanda.
Team Type 1 (an 8 person team, all with Type 1 diabetes) will be competing in the first annual international cycling race, Tour of Rwanda in Nov., 2010. Children who are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes but lack access to insulin and the ability to manage their diabetes with medical tools, die.
Children and young adults who have diabetes in our surrounding area (Tallahassee) communities will be offered the opportunity to write an essay comparing a visit to a doctor's office in Rwanda and the United States. Winners (a boy and a girl) will receive bicycles donated by The Cake Shop
and Whole Child Leon.
